Impression Management

This topic is brought up quite often in therapy/mental health environments.  It is definitely worth discussing.  At one point or another we need to end relationships with individuals because they are not good for us.   Often there is a grief process involved and it may take time to fully recover.  With social media being prevalent, it is tempting to follow individuals you are attempting to separate from.  If you care to move on, unfollow.   I understand that temptation is hard to resist however most of what your seeing, isn’t real.  It isn’t!  People do not have character transplants.  It doesn’t happen!  They may have fantastic photos all over social media, but are often riddled with conflict behind the scenes.  This is called “Impression Management”.  Wikipedia defines this as “conscious or subconscious process in which people attempt to influence the perceptions of other people about a person, object or event.  They do so by regulating and controlling information in social interaction.”  For instance, individuals will leave out the screaming and cursing arguments they have, mostly related to control.

If you cast someone out of your life (I expect for good reason), trust that they suck.

Now, let’s talk about better things to focus on!

  • Self Care.  This is first and foremost.  This includes treating yourself, beauty, exercise, and eating healthy.  It is beneficial to take a spa day every now and again!  Get a nice massage!  Do things that make working so hard worthwhile.
  • Remain Goal Oriented.  Whatever your goals may be, make sure they are well mapped out and have a plan.  It is helpful to break down large goals into smaller ones.  This will help you feel like you are making progress much quicker.
  • Engage in Positive Self Talk.  Not only should you be treating yourself nicely, you should also be talking to yourself nicely.  You need to guide your thoughts into positive patterns.  All too often it becomes easy to point out all of our flaws.  Love yourself!
  • Have Fun with Hobbies!  Whatever you enjoy doing, do more of it.  This will keep your time and mind occupied on something worthwhile.

Stop Watching, Start Doing!
